What are Perler beads?
Perler beads are small, cylindrical plastic beads with a hole in them. They’re also known as “melty beads” or “fuse beads”. Perler beads are meant to be melted together in different designs (like cat Perler beads!). Patterns are made on a plastic pegboard and then ironed so the beads stick together.
Can I use parchment paper to iron Perler beads?
Yes, parchment paper works perfectly to melt Perler beads! You can also buy specific ironing paper for Perler beads, but there’s no need to do so.
How do you melt Perler beads perfectly?
The temperature of your iron will determine how long you need to melt the beads. The Perler beads packaging says that 10 – 20 seconds on medium temperature is enough to melt the beads, but we actually needed between 30 – 45 seconds to make our Perler bead earrings. Some parts of the iron might be hotter than others, so use circular motions as you press the iron down. Make sure to lift the iron and parchment paper to check the progress every 5 – 10 seconds. The Perler bead earrings will be ready when the parchment paper sticks to the beads. Be careful not to melt the beads so much that the opening of the bead closes up – you’ll need this to add the jump ring and earring hook. If this happens, use a thick needle to push through and open one of the beads back up.
