Owl Cupcakes with Oreos

My kids LOVED these adorable owl cupcakes. They’re so easy to decorate! And they make me smile just looking at them. They’re a perfect dessert for Back to School, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or any fall get together. Simply frost the top of the cupcake, add Oreos and Reese’s Pieces, and you’re done! The tutorial below will show you exactly how to decorate these super cute owls. We used boxed cake mix to save time, so you won’t find a cupcake recipe here, but you can definitely choose your favourite cake recipe and make it from scratch instead.

What can I use instead of Reese’s Pieces?

If you don’t want to use Reese’s Pieces you could easily use M&Ms instead. You could also use other types of icing instead of candies. Try a brown decorating gel for the pupils and a dab of orange cookie icing for the beak. If you need something completely peanut free, you could also use Vermont nut free Skippers. Or use Junior Mints for the eyes and a piece of candy corn for the beak.

Can I prepare these owl cupcakes ahead of time?

You can definitely frost the cupcakes the day before as long as you store them in an airtight container. But I don’t recommend adding the owl decorations more than a few hours ahead because the Oreos will start to get soggy.

Do I have to use chocolate cupcakes?

If you don’t want to make chocolate cupcakes, either from a box or from scratch, you can definitely make a different flavour! A vanilla cake is always tasty – it’s a classic for a reason. Or to add scrumptious fall flavours to your owl cupcakes, try making a spiced carrot cake!

What can I make with the leftover Oreo pieces?

Our carrot patch cupcakes use Oreo crumbs as the “dirt” for the “carrot” to rest in! And you can also whip up these easy cookies and cream Rice Krispie treats – so tasty! If you’d like to decorate another fall themed cupcake, Your Cup of Cake has made super cute bat cupcakes made with Oreos and mini Oreos.

These easy to decorate owl cupcakes are the perfect fall dessert and are great for kids and first time decorators. Try making baby owls with mini Oreos or use coloured frosting instead of chocolate for fun rainbow coloured owls.
