I posted a similar tutorial for how to make a doll’s pillow and pillow case last week, but that one was just so small for the doll’s bed that I had to do another. This time it’s a much better size, and it has a completely reversible pillowcase for when I want to (cough I mean when Leah wants to…) do a bedding switcheroo!
How to make a reversible pillowcase for a doll
This time, I made the pillow a similar size to the pillow included with the IKEA bed, which was about 11.5″ x 10″:
Make the pillow by sewing around the edges, just leaving enough open to turn it right side out:
Turn it right side out and use the back of a seam ripper to poke out the corners:
Stuff the pillow with whatever you have. I just used the stuffing from an old pillow:
Pin the opening closed:
And sew across the entire end to close it:
The finished pillow should look like this:
For the pillow case, I cut two pieces of fabric, 1″ larger than the pillow, so 12.5″ x 11″:
Fold each piece in half and sew a straight stitch around two sides, leaving one full end open and snipping the corners:
Then, being careful to get the right sides of the fabric on the right sides, stuff one piece into the other piece:
Then fold the edges in about 1/2″ or so:
Pin them together:
And sew a straight stitch around it as close to the edge as you can get:
Then sew a second straight stitch around it about 3/4″ in from the edge to help hold the fabric pieces together:
Then slide the pillow case over the pillow:
You can see some of the inner fabric peeking through the end:
Here’s a photo of this pillow compared to the flat pillow that comes with the IKEA bedlinen set for the Duktig doll bed:
It definitely makes that pillow from last week look really small:
When you want a change in colour, take off the pillowcase, turn it inside out, and you have a completely new look!
I still plan to make a reversible blanket, and a reversible mattress. Hopefully I’ll be able to get those up later this week!
