Helpful Tips:
What type of flowers did you use?
We used faux flowers from the dollar store for our flower crowns. We found the small roses in the craft section – they’re actually paper flowers with a small wire on the back. Some of the greenery on our crowns is fabric and some of it is plastic. If you want a more authentic look to your crown, check your local craft store for more realistic looking flowers.
Can you use real flowers to make a flower crown?
Yes! You will just have to make the flower crown as close to the time of your event as possible so the flowers don’t wilt. Make sure you leave 2 to 3 inches of stem on the real flowers when you cut them for the crown. Then store your finished crown in an air conditioned room or in the refrigerator. Mist the flowers with water to refresh them before wearing the crown.
Is it better to use real flowers or fake flowers?
We definitely prefer making our flower crowns with artificial flowers. The blooms and greenery are stronger, so you don’t have to worry about them falling apart or getting damaged as you attach them. Plus fake flowers will never wilt or change colour. You can store your DIY flower crown in a bag or box, out of direct sunlight, and you’ll have it for years to come! Real flowers are, of course, extremely beautiful, but they can wilt, bruise and discolour easily. Your flower crown will have to be made right before your event and stored in the proper conditions (cool and moist).
What’s the best way to attach the flowers to the crown?
We found it easier to attach the flowers to the crown with wire. The wire was thin enough that we were able to position the flowers exactly where we wanted them and at the right angle when we used wire. However you can also attach the flowers with more floral tape. If you use floral tape, you don’t have to worry about hiding the wires because the tape helps the flowers blend right into the crown’s base. Tape is a bit bulky, so it can get difficult to get the tape between the flowers when your crown is nearly finished.
What flowers are the best for making flower crowns?
You’ll want to add several types of greenery and flowers to your flower crown. Here are some good examples you can use for your flower crown, whether you use real or faux flowers. Greenery:
Eucalyptus Olive branch Lemon leaf Leather fern Ivy Myrtle Italian ruscus
Small filler flowers:
Baby’s breath Spray rose Pom flower Snapdragon Freesia Lavender
