Helpful Tips:
Do the flower pretzels have to be refrigerated?
The flower pretzels can definitely be kept at room temperature, as long as they’re out of direct sunlight and the room isn’t too hot. However, you can refrigerate them if you’d like – we actually think they taste better that way!
Can I make my own candy melt colours?
Yes, if you can’t find melting wafers in the colours you’d like, you can add oil based food colouring to white candy melts. Melt the wafers, add in a couple drops of colour, and combine with a spoon or spatula. Add more colour until your desired shade is achieved. You must use oil based food colouring. Regular food colouring contains water, and will make the melts seize up.
Can I make the flower pretzels ahead of time? How long does a pretzel flower last?
Yes, you can definitely make your flower pretzels ahead of time. We’ve had ours in the fridge for over a week and they taste just as good as when freshly made. Your flower pretzels should last between 1 to 2 weeks if stored at room temperature in an airtight container. In the fridge they’ll be good for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
How else can I decorate my flower pretzels?
You can also add sanding sugar or other sprinkles to the flowers, or use a different type of candy for the center. Try adding a jujube, a yellow candy melt, a peach ring gummy, or jelly beans instead of the M&M’s. If you’d like, you can also cut leaves from construction paper and glue them to the bottom of the straw.
What can I do if the candy melts aren’t liquid enough?
Most of our candy melts were really smooth and perfect to work with, but one of the colours didn’t cooperate. Sometimes candy melts can seize if they’re old, if they’re heated too much, or if any water got into the bowl. If your candy melts aren’t liquid enough you can stir in a bit of vegetable oil or vegetable shortening. Start by adding 1/4 teaspoon at a time. Stir it until it’s completely mixed with the candy melts. If it’s still too stiff you can keep adding oil 1/4 teaspoon at a time until it gets to a better consistency.
These flower pretzels come together really quickly, and they taste delicious too! Make a whole bouquet in all Mom’s favourite colours as a homemade Mother’s Day treat, or give them as a gift for a birthday or other celebration.
