What is the point of a shower steamer?
Shower steamers – also called shower bombs, or shower melts – are scented tablets that dissolve in the steam of your shower and release a fragrance. The point of a shower steamer is the aromatherapy benefits they provide – so you should definitely choose a scent that matches the mood you’re looking for (more on that below!).
Are shower steamers the same as bath bombs?
No, a shower steamer is purely designed to deliver amazing scent therapy, while bath bombs have ingredients like epsom salts and sweet almond oil to soothe and nourish your skin.
How do I use a shower steamer?
Place the shower bomb on the shower floor, somewhere outside of the main spray of water. You can also place the tablet on a soap tray or shelf where a small amount of water will reach it. Activate the shower steamer with a few drops of water and watch it begin to foam! The fizzing action is activated by water and steam, and will disperse the essential oil fragrance. For the best aromatherapy experience, make sure that the steamer continues to get some water on it as you shower!
How long do shower steamers last in the shower?
After a 15 minute shower half the tablet was left, making these steamers perfect for a long, relaxing shower. If you take shorter showers there are a few options. You can use the melt for a second shower, you can make smaller shower bombs, or you can place the tablets more directly in a stream of water. This third option will give you a faster, more intense scent experience!
What molds can you make the shower steamers in?
We used a silicone muffin pan to make these shower bombs, and it worked really well! The shower bombs were very easy to remove. But you can use just about anything to make these shower bombs – other silicone molds, soap molds, plastic candy molds, or even regular muffin tins. You can even shape the melts by hand and leave them to dry on a baking tray. For smaller steamers, use a silicone ice cube tray.
How many shower steamers does this recipe make?
You can make 4 – 6 steamers in our size of mold. The cups in our muffin pan were 2-1/4 inches in diameter and about 1 inch deep. The amount of tablets made per recipe will vary based on the exact amount of water used (more moisture will make the mixture expand) and the size of your muffin tin.
How should I store my shower steamers?
You should store the shower tablets in an airtight container, like a glass jar. Baking soda absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause the tablets to dissolve more quickly if they’re left in the open. Ideally you should keep the jar of shower steamers in a location with low moisture (i.e. outside of the bathroom) and out of direct sunlight, since UV rays can react with essential oils.
What essential oil scents are best for shower steamers?
For a calm, relaxing vibe use lavender, bergamot, or patchouli. For stress relief use citrus scents, like grapefruit, lemongrass, or orange. To help with nasal congestion use eucalyptus, peppermint, spearmint, or camphor.
These homemade shower steamers are such a luxurious treat, and I love that you can adjust the amount and type of essential oil to your liking. You can even package them up in a mason jar for a super thoughtful homemade gift!
