Helpful Tips:

What type of headband do you need to make a rhinestone headband?

We used a hard black headband with a satin covering. It also has a suede inside to make it non-slip. These headbands are about 1 inch wide at their thickest point, but you can choose the size that works for you. You can use a fabric covered headband like we did, or use a hard plastic one. Or decorate a thin metal headband with rhinestones. You can also add rhinestones to a stretchy fabric headband. Place the headband around a cylindrical container to help keep its shape and then add the rhinestones. You may want to space these rhinestones apart so the headband stays nice and stretchy. Or buy rhinestone trim and attach each end to a piece of elastic. This thin tiara style of headband is perfect for weddings or prom.

What rhinestones do you need for a rhinestone headband?

We recommend buying a multi-pack of rhinestones with a number of different sizes available. We used sizes ss6 (2mm), ss8 (2.5mm), ss10 (2.8mm), ss12 (3mm), ss16 (4mm) and ss20 (4.7mm). It’s also better to have more of the larger rhinestones, since they take up more space and therefore make the project go faster. It’s also really important to have tiny rhinestones to fill in the gaps on the headband. We used flatback rhinestones, which are meant to be glued onto surfaces. But if your headband is fabric you can use hotfix rhinestones and fuse them into place one by one, with a special applicator tool.

What glue is best for making a rhinestone headband?

We used Gem Tac to make our rhinestone headbands, which is a glue specifically made for rhinestones. It dries clear, and can be washed once it has cured. Gem Tac is quite thin and spreadable, and it’s flexible once it dries. This means that the headband can easily be put on and taken off without disturbing the stones. You can also use Liquid Fusion, which is another very strong glue that’s recommended for rhinestoning. Or use strong craft glues, like B7000 or E6000.

These rhinestone headbands are SO PRETTY and they’re a lot of fun to make! The headbands glisten and gleam as you turn your head, making them the perfect accessory for a special night out. Wear your DIY headband to date night or prom, or even create your own bridal accessory for a shower or bachelorette party. Try spelling “BRIDE” with rhinestones for an extra cute and personalized touch!
