What is a running stitch?

What can I use for the center and stem of my DIY felt poppy if I don’t have pipe cleaners?
You can glue a black button or pom pom onto the center of the poppy in place of the spiral pipe cleaner. And for the stem, floral wire or painted wooden skewers will also work well.
What can I do with my DIY felt poppies?
