What do you stuff felt ornaments with?
We used poly-fill, a polyester stuffing to stuff our felt Christmas ornaments. But you don’t have to buy special stuffing. Use the stuffing from an old pillow you have lying around the house. Or use the stuffing from an inexpensive pillow from the dollar store. You can also use stuffing from an old teddy bear, or stuff the ornaments with cotton balls or bits of scrap fabric. Make sure the fabric is cut small, or else your ornaments might look bumpy.
Do I have to sew these felt ornaments?
If you don’t feel comfortable sewing your felt ornaments, you definitely don’t have to! You can use hot glue or fabric glue to stick the felt together. Check out our felt dragon post for more instructions on how to do this.
What type of felt is used to make felt Christmas ornaments?
We used inexpensive soft craft felt to make our felt ornaments. This worked well for us to keep the craft inexpensive while making a lot of ornaments. Sometimes cheaper felt can pill if you touch or play with it a lot. So you may want to use wool felt, especially if you’re giving these ornaments as a gift. It’s more expensive, but it will hold up better, giving you a DIY ornament that should last for decades.
What else do I need to decorate my felt ornaments?
The stocking in our step by step tutorial is made only of felt and thread, but a few of our other ornaments have some non-felt accessories that you might want to add. Both the snowman and the reindeer have 6mm black bead eyes, and the Christmas tree has 7mm rhinestones glued to it for a nice sparkle. You could also add pom poms or sew on some sequins. Any of the ornaments would look nice with snowflakes or other shapes embroidered on them. The stocking and mitten would also look cute with a faux poinsettia or holly branch glued to them.
These felt ornaments are SO CUTE! They look great hanging on the Christmas tree, or used as a gift topper. Felt Christmas ornaments are easy for sewing beginners, and they also make an awesome homemade gift. Use one or all 7 of our felt ornament patterns that are free and ready to print. We love how cheerful these felt ornaments are, and we think you’ll love them too!
