When I was in architecture school, I did an 8 month work term in the beautiful city of Ottawa. It was gorgeous. My sister was in med school there at the time too, so I rented the room in the basement of her townhouse. My sister and I lived together during our undergrad years, so we were used to it. And we were more like best friends than anything else. We were clueless though. I remember when the weather finally (FINALLY) started to get warm in Ottawa that year, we had the bright idea to go buy a barbecue. Which would have been great if either of us knew how to use the barbecue. We set it up on the patio off the kitchen (which was actually just a tiny set of stairs with a landing), and we made shish kabobs on what I remember being the hottest day ever. And I had the honour (surprise surprise) of figuring out how to use the barbecue and grilling the kabobs. It was SO HOT that day and the sun was beating down on me while I grilled and it took FOREVER. I felt like my toes were going to melt. But in the end, our shish kabobs were delicious! Amazing even! But I think that might be the one and only time I have ever used a barbecue by myself? Ahhh! The shame!
If I’m completely honest with you, my husband is the one who does all the grilling in our house. I don’t even know how to light our barbecue. If it was a barbecuing emergency (hey, it could happen…), I’m sure I could figure it out. I’m a smart cookie. But it’s a gas barbecue instead of propane, and the starter is broken, so somehow I find that scary? (I made him light my mason jar citronella torches too…)

I need to bring some of that adventurous spirit back into my life! Because these days, if I can’t grill it in a frying pan, I send it off with my husband into the backyard to be barbecued. I can’t wait to see his face when I suggest we need to switch up our barbecuing routine with some of these AWESOME looking ideas. (I’m pretty sure he’s not going to be as thrilled as I am, but I’m totally going to sell it). Grilled pineapple!?!? YES, please. And that Grilled Caesar Salad!? Why the heck not?! Save some time this summer and throw some of these other awesome things on the barbecue while your meat cooks. Or ditch the meat all together? These look soooooo good!! Grilled donuts!?!? Seriously!? Where have these been all my life?!
